Message from Chris F. Willis, CEO In 1993, Intel shipped the first Pentium computer chips, and the introduction of the graphic web browser Mosaic launched the first widespread use of the Internet as we know it today. March 17 of that year, I officially left my day job and started Media 1 in the back bedroom office of our home on the Willis family blueberry farm. Today, 15 years later, we are a team of more than 20 professionals developing custom learning and performance systems for some of the world’s largest companies. We’ve sure seen a lot of changes in the learning industry over the past 15 years! When I started Media 1, many office workers did not have access to a desktop computer. There was no such thing as a corporate intranet, let alone an online “university.” Most people did not have access to e-mail or even understand what it was. My husband, Robert, and I ran a computer bulletin board from our home. We made our computer available to users who dialed in directly. Message packets were relayed from node to node through a network of home computers (strategically placed to avoid long distance phone fees)! It still seems incredible to me that we now hold teleconferences with global project teams and share information real time on our desktop computer screens. When I speak to college students, I tell them not to worry so much about what they will be doing five years from now since it may not even be invented yet. The same is true for learning professionals. What new tools and technologies might be available to us over the next five years? Since I do not have a crystal ball, I’m as excited as you to see what new “magic” will emerge. Fortunately, we have a solid foundation of core skills and knowledge to draw upon. These skills will ensure that we will be able to make the best use of our newest resources and produce valuable results. In this issue of Media 1 Focus, we share some of our hard-won knowledge. As our anniversary gift to you, we offer 15 tips—one for each year—to help you design better learning outcomes. Best! Chris F. Willis, CEO, Media 1 |
